Verna Leora Griffiths

July 21, 1924 ~ June 14, 2017 (age 92)

Verna L. Griffiths passed away suddenly on June 14, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Meridian, ID, surrounded by her family.  She was born in Boise, ID, to George and Mabel Brashears on July 21, 1924, the seventh of eight children.  The family moved frequently in the southwest Idaho area during Verna’s early years, ending up in Wilder, ID, where she graduated from high school in 1942.  Afterwards, she was accepted to St. Luke’s Hospital Nursing School in Boise and received her RN diploma in 1945.  Her first nursing position was at a military hospital near Seattle, WA, until WWII ended in August of that year.  At that time, she travelled to El Paso, TX, to marry her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Griffiths, on September 18, 1945 at Biggs Army Air Base Chapel.  He had been training as a pilot for the Army Air Corps and was preparing to be deployed overseas until orders changed with the end of the war.  The two of them returned home to Idaho to begin their married life.  They started farming with Ken’s brother, Edgar, in Parma on land owned by the brothers’ father, Lewis Griffiths. Ken and Verna eventually bought their own land, and over the years, bought and improved several places while raising their four sons. They were able to build three different homes during those years with the last property in Caldwell before they retired to Silver Creek Estates in Nampa in 2005.  Verna lived in Silver Creek until June 2016 surviving her husband’s death the prior year. Her last move was to Grace Assisted Living in Meridian where she remained until her death.

After being a homemaker for several years, Verna returned to nursing in the obstetrics unit at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in 1964.  Following this, she worked for a private physician as a personal office nurse for many years. Later, she accepted a position in the rehabilitation department of Mercy Hospital in Nampa in 1973.  Her last professional job was as a Home Health nurse where she served the community until her retirement in 1989.

Verna and Kenny enjoyed travel throughout the US, including Hawaii and Alaska, and also enjoyed a Caribbean cruise.  They loved the music of their era, traveling to Branson, MO, twice to attend musical shows. Along with the music, they greatly enjoyed dancing and found opportunities to continue this well into their 80s.  Playing pinochle was another favorite pastime they shared with family and friends.  Verna loved visits by family and through the years enjoyed cooking and helping with family events -- her homemade pies being a specialty. She also enjoyed gardening where she raised both vegetables and an array of flowers.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter-in-law (Carol Griffiths) and all of her siblings--which included three who died in childhood and four sisters—Evva Melvin, Thelma Givert, Esther Waller and Carlie Baldwin.  She is survived by her sons and their families—Sidney (Sandra) of Wilder, Paul (Brenda Janzen) of Cascade, Curt (Sonja) of Nampa, and Glenn (Tresha) of Meridian. Survivors also include 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
