Leon Hammer

June 27, 1977 ~ March 8, 2018 (age 40)

Born June 17, 1929, in Rexburg, Idaho to Earl and Erma Hammer, he was one of 6 boys. The Hammers moved to Willow Creek (a little town outside of Vale, Oregon) in January 1936. Leon Joined the Navy in July of 1946 right after his seventeenth birthday. He enlisted in the Navy and moved to San Francisco and was stationed on the USS Orion in World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in February of 1950. He worked at various jobs including Coca Cola Co. as a foreman until October of 1960. He then enlisted into the Coast guard in Alameda, California where he served until October 1964. He was Honorably Discharged and received the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal. He then enlisted into the Air Force at Hill Air Force Base in Utah in November of 1965. He was then stationed at Clark AB, Philippines working on the F-4C fixed wing aircraft until April 1970 when he received another Honorable Discharge. He then went to work as a carpenter foreman at a mobile home manufacture in Meridian, Idaho for a few years. He also worked misc. Lead Carpenter jobs for a few more years. He then decided to enlist in the Air Force again at Hill Air Force Base in Utah on August 5, 1974. He worked as an Aircraft Mechanic and received the “Sustained Superior Performance Award “on June 27, 1977. He retired from the Air Force 1979. He then moved back to Idaho and enjoyed fishing and gold panning. He then met the “love of his life” Barbara, while doing home remodeling, Barbara and he remodel several homes. He helped out on her ranch and loved being in nature. He finally decided to “settle down” in Caldwell, Idaho. They were married January 1998. Leon and Barbara (Bobbie) enjoyed a wonderful life together dancing, camping and just being with each other. They took various trips to Porta Rico, Coasta Rico, and to Utah with the grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his great- grandchild Chancy Christen Caldwell.

Leon is survived by his daughter, Rexan Hyer; step sons Todd and Cody; 10 grandchildren: Angie, Robert, Amanda, Samantha, Jayde, Cody, Eli, Sharayah, Rebekkah, and Brittney and 16 great -grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, March 16, 2018 at 2:30 PM at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Caldwell, Idaho.
