Born December 26, 1926, in Morrill,  Nebraska to Josephus and Josephine Thoesen Franklin;  the ninth child of 9 children.  In the 1930’s the Franklin family moved from their farm in Nebraska to farm in Central Cove, ID where he attended school.  He enlisted in the Navy the minute he turned 17 and was a gunner on the Liberty ship USS St. Thomas Augustus in the Philippine Islands and his ship was sunk by a kamikaze plane.
