Elaine Cynthia Leppert was born in Boise, Idaho on June 25, 1953, the fifth of nine children of Jacob and Iris Leppert.
She grew up on the family farm near Greenleaf, Idaho where she helped not only in the field but in the dairy barn as well. She was as comfortable on the tractor or milking cows as she was as being the director of the library.
Elaine graduated from Vallivue High School (1971) and Northwest Nazarene University (1975) and in 1976 she went to Oregon State University where she received her Master’s degree in library science.
While in college she worked at the college library and summers at Boise Public Library and then at Caldwell Public Library. Upon graduation from Oregon State she worked at Caldwell Public as the Reference Librarian. When the director position opened, the board asked her to take the position and she finally agreed. She remained at the library for over 34 years.
The library was Elaine’s heart and soul; she knew the collection well and could help patrons find what they needed quickly. She considered her staff at the library to be the best in the state of Idaho. She appreciated each one as they pulled together to run the library during her illness. When she was forced to retire, her heart was broken. She had no image of herself doing anything else.
Elaine was part of the Optimist club, Zonta, and the Caldwell City Historical Society. She was a member of the Friendship Club and volunteered for the local 4-H shows. She enjoyed gardening and, of course, reading. She co-authored a book about early Caldwell history, Early Caldwell Through Photographs.
Elaine was a Mariner’s baseball fan. She drove to Seattle a couple of times each season to see games, nearly always taking along a sister or brother and some of her nieces and nephews. In fact, Elaine took the time to include nieces and nephews in many activities from camping to fair projects to fine art presentations in the local area.
Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Iris Leppert, a sister Eileen Leppert and a brother Donald Leppert.
She is survived by brothers; George (Yvonne) Leppert of Filer, Idaho, Glenn (Sue) Leppert of Haviland, Kansas, Harold Leppert of Salem, Oregon, and Tom (Sherry) Leppert of Caldwell, Idaho and sisters; Patty (Larry) Mills of Caldwell, Idaho and Claudia (Vic) Gendron of Post Falls, Idaho and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Elaine’s service will be held Thursday, August 8, 2013, 3:00PM at Deer Flat Methodist Church, 17703 Beet Rd Caldwell, ID 83607.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Elaine’s name to the Caldwell Public Library, 1010 Dearborn Street, Caldwell, Idaho 83605.
